LMS integration (LTI 1.3) — overview

Connect RaeNotes to Moodle, LearnWorlds or any other LTI 1.3 platform so that students open a RaeNotes assignment straight from a course, upload their recording, get it transcribed and reviewed, and see the result in the LMS gradebook.

What the integration does

An LTI activity in your LMS becomes a RaeNotes assignment. When a student clicks it:

  • RaeNotes signs them in automatically — no separate RaeNotes password. The account is matched or created from the email address the LMS sends in the launch.
  • The student is added to the RaeNotes team you selected when registering the platform, so team competency models, sharing rules and billing apply.
  • The student uploads a recording. RaeNotes transcribes and processes it.
  • Progress and grades are posted back to the LMS gradebook automatically.
  • Clicking the same activity again reopens the existing recording instead of starting a new upload.

Two workflows to choose from

Workflow What happens
Upload only The student uploads a recording, RaeNotes processes it, and the LMS gradebook shows Completed once processing finishes. No review, no instructor involvement.
Self-assessment with supervisor feedback
(default)
The full loop: upload → processing → a review is created automatically with the student as Required reviewer and their instructor as Supervisor → the grade is posted back as each party submits.

The self-assessment workflow needs to know who the instructor is. How that email reaches RaeNotes depends on the LMS: Moodle sends it inside the launch as a custom parameter, LearnWorlds sends it out of band through an automation webhook. Both are covered in the per-LMS guides below.

Before you start

  • An LTI 1.3 platform. RaeNotes supports LTI 1.3 only (LTI 1.1 and LTI 2 are not supported).
  • API access enabled on your RaeNotes account. The Add LTI Platform button only appears when this feature is switched on — Contact us if you don't see it.
  • Team admin rights. You can only register a platform against a team you administer, so create the team first. See Manage Teams.
  • Admin rights in the LMS, because tool registration is a site-level operation there.
  • The instructor already has a RaeNotes account and is a member of that team — required for the self-assessment workflow. RaeNotes does not invite instructors automatically.

How setup works

Registration is a two-way exchange: each side produces values the other needs.

  1. Copy three URLs from the RaeNotes Integrations page into your LMS to register RaeNotes as an external tool.
  2. Copy the identifiers and endpoints your LMS generates back into the RaeNotes Add LTI Platform dialog.
  3. Pick the team, the workflow, and how the instructor's email is delivered.
  4. Add the activity to a course and test it as a student.

Note. Your LMS must be configured to share the launching user's name and email with the tool. RaeNotes matches and provisions accounts by the email claim, so a launch without an email address cannot be completed.
